Bolan East

Located in the southern part of the block near Mach City, District Kachhi, Balochistan, Bolan East Oil Field was discovered with the drilling of Bolan East-1 in 2018. Production through Extended Well Testing commenced in Nov-2020, yielding heavy crude oil with an API gravity of 16. This oil generates a substantial amount of furnace oil, which is directly used as an alternative to Residual Fuel Oil (RFO) or Furnace Fuel Oil (FFO) without additional processing. Building on this success, Bolan East-2 was drilled in 2025 successfully targeting the Chiltan reservoir, further optimizing recovery and strengthening the block’s production profile.

The Ziarat Block, including Bolan East, remains a key asset for MariEnergies. Through structured exploration and development, the Company continues to maximize hydrocarbon recovery while ensuring safe and efficient operations.

Zarghun South

Zarghun South Gas Field is located in the Bolan Block of Balochistan, approximately 57 kilometers northeast of Quetta in Harnai District. MariEnergies assumed operatorship of the block in 2003 and was granted Zarghun South D&PL in 2004. The block already had two wells drilled by the previous operator, namely ZS-1 and ZS-2, which had been tested at multiple formations for hydrocarbon potential. In 2012, after necessary reservoir studies, Dunghan Formation was declared a tight reservoir, qualifying it for incentive pricing. Production facilities with a capacity of 25 MMSCFD were commissioned in 2014, with ZS-1 and ZS-2 supplying gas to Quetta City. Production increased further with the addition of ZS-3 and ZS-4 wells in 2017 and 2020. MariEnergies continues to look for additional exploration avenues in the block to arrest the production decline. The field now producing at its tail end, exhibits high water-gas ratio and frequent load issues in the existing wells, which are managed using various techniques, including the application of soap sticks.

Mari Field

Mari Field, MariEnergies’ flagship asset, located in Ghotki District, Sindh, is Pakistan’s largest gas-producing field and a cornerstone of the Company’s portfolio. Discovered in 1957, the field began production in 1967 and has since been developed across multiple reservoirs, including Habib Rahi Limestone (HRL), Pirkoh Limestone (PKL), Sui Upper Lime (SUL), Sui Main Lime (SML), Lower Goru B, and the recently discovered Ghazij formation.

Supported by an extensive network of 530 kilometers of pipelines, Mari Field plays a pivotal role in national food security by supplying natural gas to fertilizer plants, meeting more than 90% of the Country’s urea requirements. Since its inception, it has maintained reliable production, ensuring a consistent gas supply for both feedstock and fuel.

  1. Habib Rahi Limestone Reservoir

HRL, the backbone of Mari Field, was the first reservoir developed in Mari Field and has played a central role in Pakistan’s energy supply. Production began in 1967 with six wells, followed by additional drilling in multiple development phases to increase production.

As of July 2025, 127 wells have been drilled in HRL, with 121 currently in production. In 2022, the field achieved a major milestone with its first-ever pilot horizontal well, followed by four additional horizontal wells, marking an important milestone in its field development.

Continuous improvement through projects such as debottlenecking, compression, and production optimization has helped maintain gas production and effective reservoir management. With ongoing enhancements planned, HRL remains a key contributor to Mari Field’s production and continues to support Pakistan’s energy security.

  • b. SML-SUL Reservoir

SML-SUL Fields are dry gas reservoirs within Mari Field, consisting of Bhitai, Shahbaz, Shaheen, Hilal, SML, and Iqbal fields, each distinguished by different fault blocks and gas-water contacts.

Discovered through SML-1 in 2005, followed by Bhitai-1discovery in 2007 and subsequent 3D seismic-driven discoveries, the fields continue to contribute to Mari Field’s production. As of July 2025, 12 wells are on production.

Recent developments include Pakistan’s first smart completion well in 2024, along with planned infill wells to sustain plateau production. Future initiatives focus on booster compression, rigless interventions, and reservoir optimization to enhance recovery and ensure consistent gas supply.

  • c. Pirkoh Reservoir

Pirkoh Limestone (PKL) reservoir was discovered in 2005 with the SML-1 well. Since discovery, seven more wells have been drilled in PKL. Currently, the gas from this reservoir is primarily being used as fuel.

  • d. Lower Goru-B Reservoir

Goru-B reservoir, also known as Mari Deep, is one of the key producing zones within Mari D&PL. It was discovered in 1997 through the drilling of the Mari Deep-1 exploratory well, which confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons in the Lower Goru-B sandstone formation. Regular production from the field commenced in 2009.

Goru-B is a sandstone reservoir characterized by multiple vertically stacked sand bodies interbedded with thin shale layers. The reservoir primarily contains lean gas with a relatively high CO2 content. As of July 2025, 22 wells have been drilled in the reservoir, most of which are active gas producers. Continuous monitoring and optimization initiatives have been undertaken to manage production performance and water handling across the field.

Integrated with the Sachal Gas Processing Complex, Goru-B plays an important role in supporting Mari Field’s long-term production and energy contribution to the Country.

  • e. Ghazij Reservoir

The Ghazij Reservoir, a recent landmark discovery at Mari Field, perfectly illustrates how nature conceals its treasures. The reservoir had been penetrated by more than 30 wells with no signs of hydrocarbons. MariEnergies re-evaluated all horizons in an effort to revitalize the field and planned an exploratory well within the Ghazij Member which is mainly composed of shale with very thin limestone stringers, having thickness ranging from 0.75 to 2.0 m. In 2022, the pilot well Mari Ghazij-1 proved the reservoir potential of these limestone layers, and subsequent appraisal and development wells confirmed reservoir extent. With a fast-paced development, 11 wells have already been put on production, with a few more wells in drilling and tie-in stages. The development is being carried out under Phase-I development plan, while Phase-II is being planned to further increase the field’s production potential. Ghazij contributes to Mari Field’s overall output, supporting Pakistan’s energy supply, and highlights the complex geology of the reservoir that requires meticulous planning and management.
